HLNA Labs

Practical software for real-world problems.

HLNA Labs is an independent technology studio building software across personal knowledge, AI reliability, system intelligence, cybersecurity, search visibility, self-hosted media and industry publishing.

We build tools that help people understand complex systems, automate useful work and stay in control of their data and technology.

01Projects

What we're building

Independent projects at different stages. Statuses are kept honest: nothing here is described as available until it is.

All projects

Personal Knowledge

Brainbase

Your personal knowledge and operating system.

Brainbase brings together information scattered across conversations, documents, projects, tasks and digital history, turning it into structured, searchable knowledge while retaining its original source and context.

Status: In development

System Intelligence

Pulse

Understand your Mac over time.

Pulse is a system-observation and storage-safety platform designed to show not just what your Mac is doing now, but what has been happening over time. It combines live system information with persistent observation, event history, storage visibility and diagnostics.

Status: Active development

AI Reliability

Proof / Relay

Know whether your AI actually followed the rules.

Proof evaluates AI behaviour against explicit requirements and evidence. Relay provides the controlled execution layer around AI actions, helping make autonomous work observable, constrained and verifiable.

Status: Active development

Search Intelligence

Essio

Search visibility without the guesswork.

Essio combines technical site analysis, search performance data and AI-assisted prioritisation to identify what is holding a website back and what should be fixed next.

Status: In development

Cybersecurity

Securii

Security you can understand.

Securii helps make device security visible and actionable by explaining what was found, why it matters, what can be fixed and whether remediation actually worked.

Status: Beta development

Self-hosted Media

Media Command

Your media server, under one roof.

Media Command provides a single control layer across services such as Plex, Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr and Audiobookshelf, making self-hosted media infrastructure easier to understand and operate.

Status: In development

Industry Publishing

The Weighbridge

Waste, recovery and the business of material in Australia.

The Weighbridge is an independent publication covering the operational, commercial and technological changes shaping Australia's waste and resource-recovery sector.

Status: In development

02The intelligence layer

HLNA AI

HLNA AI is the shared intelligence and orchestration layer across the HLNA ecosystem.

Rather than embedding an isolated chatbot into every product, HLNA AI is intended to provide common capabilities for reasoning, retrieval, agents, persistent context and controlled tool use.

Brainbase provides knowledge and history.
HLNA AI provides intelligence that can work with it.

Other HLNA products can use the same layer where useful, without each project reinventing its own AI stack.

Projects call one shared layer instead of each building their own AI stack.

03Approach

One lab. Different problems.

HLNA Labs projects cover very different areas, but they usually begin from the same place:

There should be a better way to do this.
  • Sometimes that means understanding years of personal information.
  • Sometimes it means knowing why a computer suddenly consumed 100 GB of storage.
  • Sometimes it means proving an AI agent completed a task correctly.
  • Sometimes it means operating a self-hosted media system without opening six different applications.

The technology changes.
The approach doesn't.

  1. 01Understand the problem.Start with what is actually happening, not with the solution we would like to build.
  2. 02Preserve the evidence.Keep sources, history and provenance, so conclusions can be checked later.
  3. 03Automate carefully.Automation should be bounded, observable and reversible where possible.
  4. 04Keep people in control.Software proposes and explains. People decide.

04Lab

Inside the Lab

Not every idea starts as a product.

The Lab is where smaller tools, prototypes and experiments live while we work out whether they solve a problem worth pursuing.

Every project carries one of these statuses

  1. ResearchUnderstanding the problem. Reading, measuring and sketching. There may be no code yet.
  2. PrototypeWorking code built to test an idea. Rough edges are expected and it is not meant for general use.
  3. In DevelopmentCommitted to and being built properly. Not yet available for others to use.
  4. BetaUsable by a limited group while it is tested against real-world conditions.
  5. LivePublicly available and maintained.
  6. PausedWork has stopped for now. The problem may still be worth solving later.
  7. ArchivedNo longer being worked on. Kept for reference and for what it taught us.

06About

An independent studio

HLNA Labs is an independent software and technology studio based in South Australia.

It exists as a home for practical software, research and experiments that begin with problems worth solving rather than products looking for problems.

Built by James Palmer.
